About the fundraiser beneficiary organizations

Fundraiser beneficiary organization Last Mile Education Fund (https://www.marketplace.org/shows/marketplace-tech/the-systemic-barriers-to-landing-a-big-tech-internship/) offers a disruptive approach to social inequity and increasing diversity in technology by addressing critical funding gaps for low-income, underrepresented students within reach of a degree.

The org has disbursed nearly 4K grants of an average ticket size of $6K. Recipients of the grants earn $40K more annually, than if they did not complete their degrees. Grant recipients are 90% women. Last Mile grantees are 32% Black, 25% Hispanic, 16% Asian, 15% White, and 3% Indigenous. Grants have impact on the grant recipients and their families. Often the grants contribute to ending housing insecurity not only for the degree earners but creating the opportunity to invest in the larger family, as well.

NumFocus is a foundation to promote open practices in research, data, and scientific computing by serving as a fiscal sponsor for open source projects and organizing community-driven educational programs. The foundation was founded by friend Travis Oliphant, the creator of NumPy. Joining him in founding NumFocus were Fernando Perez (created Jupyter), and John Hunter (created Matplotlib).
